Marseille-Provence 2013, European Capital of Culture

A supremely cultural year ahead…
Marseille has been designated as European Capital of Culture in 2013. This title is assigned for a period of one year to a European city. Athens (1985), Madrid (1992), Lille (2004), Liverpool (2008) and Istanbul (2010) have already had the privilege of this title.
For the occasion, Marseille, and the whole Provence region (Martigues, Arles, Istres, Marseilles, Aubagne, Aix-en-Provence, etc.), are proposing a multitude of activities in all artistic and cultural disciplines (music, visual arts, contemporary dance, theatre, cuisine, theatre, etc.) throughout the year.
Projects and worksites have also gotten underway. New spaces dedicated to culture will be open to the public during the year: the Museum of Civilisations in Europe and the Mediterranean near the Old Port, the Regional Centre of the Mediterranean, a new FRAC, the Regards de Provence Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the extension of the Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles in Arles, etc.
A rewarding and supremely cultural year lies ahead.
