Château d'If fortress

The former prison in Marseille.
Off the bay of Marseilles and the Vieux Port, the island of If has long served as a base for pirates, smugglers or, more peacefully, fishermen.
The fortress located at the centre of the island was built in the 16th century on the orders of François I to protect access to the port. From 1580, it was converted into a state prison.
The world famous Château d'If is linked with Alexandre Dumas's famous character, Edmond Dantès, or the Count of Monte Cristo.
