Fort Saint-Nicolas in Marseille

The Marseille defence.
The Fort Saint-Nicolas in Marseille is at the entrance of the Old Port, on the South bank. The Fort Saint-Nicolas is a fort with two compounds, a ditch and walls. It is built on a chalky outcrop between the port, Saint-Victor Abbey and the Pharo. Built in 1660 by the Chevalier de Clerville, on commission by Louis 14th, who wanted to be able to dominate Marseille in the event of a rebellion. The fort was listed as a Historic Monument in 1969.
